Sungrow is the technology provider for the Hazelwood Battery Energy Storage System expansion (HBESS 2) in Victoria, Australia, developed with ENGIE. The 150 MW / 300 MWh project will use Sungrow’s PowerTitan 2.0 storage systems with grid-forming capability, with commercial operations targeted for 2028.

66 PowerTitan 2.0 units and 33 power conversion systems

According to Sungrow’s announcement dated 27 October 2026, the project will deploy 66 ST5015-UX battery energy storage systems from the PowerTitan 2.0 series, 33 SC6900UD-MV power conversion system (PCS) inverters and the company’s EMS3000 smart controller. Elecnor is the balance-of-plant contractor.

Sungrow highlights the PowerTitan 2.0 series’ high energy density, liquid cooling for thermal stability, advanced battery management for safety and monitoring, and high-performance power conversion for efficient and responsive grid support.

Grid-forming capability to support stability

The announcement states that grid-forming capability will strengthen network performance as renewable generation grows. According to the company, the technology supports voltage and frequency stability, responds rapidly to changing grid conditions, eases the integration of higher shares of variable renewables and adds grid resilience.

Hazelwood 2 is expected to add significant storage to Victoria’s energy infrastructure and support Australia’s National Electricity Market (NEM) by storing and releasing power when needed.

“An important step in grid-forming storage”

Thomas Hou, Managing Director at Sungrow Australia, said the Hazelwood BESS 2 represents an important step in advancing grid-forming energy storage in Australia, adding that the company aims to support grid stability and renewable integration through its collaboration with ENGIE.
